Motivated by Jazz was made during a two-day workshop created by Rhett Brewer. Instrumental music and soundscapes were played to us and we were asked to close our eyes while drawing and responding to the sounds. The premise of this activity was the assumption that everyone may have some remnants of synaesthesia, with the possibility that new ways of representation might be found.

As a mature aged student at Nepean College of Advanced Education, I felt that I had finally found my tribe. I enjoyed the stimulation of both practical and theoretical work enormously. There was a wonderful sense of open mindedness with ideas and experimentation in our work practice. The whole three-year, full-time course was designed to expose the students to multifaceted pedagogy. Lectures included philosophy, political theory, feminism, avant-garde film to name a few. Tutorials were lively and stimulating and we found ourselves not wanting them to end. Friendships were made and long lasting relationships established. It was the best of times. It was a tragedy when the highly regarded Visual Arts Degree that was developed in Western Sydney was axed.
