Turmites: Red Mix, 2005
Single channel video with sound
4:16 mins

Turmites: Red Mix is part of a series of generative audiovisual works made using cellular automata and 2-dimensional Turing machines also known as “turmites”. Populations of turmites multiply and roam across a 2D pixel grid leaving coloured patterns in their wake. Their environmental conditions are manipulated and the rulesets governing their movement are allowed to mutate. Visible patterns emerge from the motion of successful populations. Births and deaths are output as wave table data to the audio stream. Created using Processing.

The work selected for Space YZ is representative of the kind of work I was making in my final years at UWS. It was at this time I learned free open source software tools such as Processing and Pure Data, and the experience of self-directed, project-based learning was foundational to my skills as a programmer today.

Hibernation, 2004, duration variable, processing

One of a series of generative audiovisual works utilising a spring-mass physics engine. Long strings of nodes connected by spring forces explode from a tightly compressed initial state, gradually coming to rest in tangled curving forms. The displacement and velocity of the nodes control pitch, phase and amplitude of a bank of oscillators to generate the accompanying sound. Created using Processing and Pure Data.
