Ware, 1993, installation view: CBD Gallery, 1993

Ware was created from a combination of found and borrowed objects. The 1950’s industrial light fixture is the central element and inspiration. It was first exhibited at (defunct Sydney artist-run initiative) CBD Gallery and then selected for the 1996 Adelaide Festival. Chief curator David O’Halloran proposed a bold and somewhat controversial project titled Compost in which 15 artists’ works were installed in private homes in the suburb of Norwood in Adelaide. I recall driving to each house located on the map and the peculiar sensation of observing random interiors, seeking out the unknown artworks. They were mostly quite obvious in their displacement. Ware certainly was unmistakable. It was installed in the kitchen of a shared student home, the greasy lamp protruding over the kitchen table. The tenants seemed quite shocked to learn I was the artist.

I was luckily part of the last years at the Peachtree Studios in Penrith. The combination of experimental teachings, diverse personalities and off-campus industrial location was a unique experience.
